Flower Girl & Page Boy – to be or not to be….

Flower girls and page boys (ring bearers) add an element of innocent childlike charm and warmth to any wedding ceremony.  A miniature fairy princess together with her tiny prince charming leading a procession of adults is both adorable and endearing, however you will need to make sure that they are comfortable with you, your ceremony, their outfits and their responsibilities.

Possible duties of the flower girl & page boy:

  • To attend pre-wedding day ceremony rehearsals
  • Flower girl & page boy to walk down the isle
  • Flower girl to walk before the bride and throw petals down the aisle to symbolize the brides new chosen path in life.
  • Page boy to deliver the wedding rings down the aisle to the groom.
  • Hold a basket of rose petals or confetti for other guests to throw at the newlyweds as they depart.
  • Possibly stand up with the bridesmaids & groomsmen during the length (or part thereof) of the ceremony. Remember that children will often find it difficult to stand through an entire ceremony so it may be a good idea to let them sit down with their parents after their initial duties have been performed.
  • To leave ceremony with bridal party.
  • Be present in all wedding photos.
  • May be required to walk into reception together – with other duties during reception – ie holding ceremonial ribbon that bride and groom will cut, waltz/dance with bridal party etc.

Flower Girl May Need:

  • Dress – Some brides like to draw features from their own wedding gowns, choosing matching colours, fabrics, shapes or themes to shape their flower girl’s look. If there is no obvious theme for your bridal party’s attire, consider choosing a flower girl outfit to match up with the general feel of your wedding. Is it classic, modern, elegant, casual or glamorous? Most importantly though, make sure the dress is comfortable and age appropriate.
  • Bolero or wrap It is a long day and it can get a little chilly in the evening – especially between the ceremony and reception time. If they are cold, then chances are they will get fidgety and grumpy.
  • Hair Accessories Tiara, headband, hair comb or flower halo.
  • Jewellery – Necklace, bracelet, earrings – to complement their dress or bridesmaids accessories.
  • Shoes and stockings Purchase shoes approx. 2 – 4 weeks before the wedding – not too early as they can grow out of them very quickly. It is a good idea for the children to wear them around the house to ensure that they don’t get blisters on the wedding day and they can get more comfortable with wearing that style of shoe. Jiffies may sound like a good shoe option – but make sure they have a sole as water will easily seep through them in wet weather conditions and they will not be comfortable for children if they are to be worn out doors on rough surfaces. Sheer stockings can make the day more comfortable for your little flower girl – they ensure shoe comfort and can keep them warmer throughout the long day.
  • Basket with rose petals, flower ball, posy, dilly bag Whatever best suits your requirement for the day. Can be made to match your colours & theme.
  • Flower girl gift A great way to say thank you and also to give them, something to remember the day by. Ie goblet, compact mirror, trinket box…

** Lace fans and parasols can add a wonderful touch to the photos and are a great accessory on a hot, sunny day.

Pageboy may need:

  • Suit (trousers, shirt, vest, tie, jacket) – Colours and styles to complement with outfits of groomsmen or groom. It may be extremely difficult to match shades exactly. It’s hard to believe, but buying the suit can actually be cheaper than hiring it. Trouser length and jacket sleeve length may need to be altered for perfect fit.
  • Accessories – Belt or braces, skinny tie or bow tie – to ensure comfort and dependant on the look you would like to create.
  • Shoes  –  Black is most common, other colours may be difficult to find in the smaller sizes.
  • Ring cushion or ring box – If you are not confident with letting the page boy carry the real rings, allow the page boy to carry replicas and entrust the real rings to your best man. Alternatively you can sew/tie the rings to the ring bearing pillow.
  • Page boy gift– A great way to say thank you and also to give them something to remember the special day by.  Ie goblet, pewter money box, carousel…
